KUCHING: An elderly woman was killed after she was trapped under the rubble following the collapse of her house’s kitchen area at Kampung Semariang Batu this morning.

According to Petra Jaya fire station chief Azaharul Sahari, 72-year-old Hajijah Mahtar was pronounced dead by medical personnel due to a serious head injury.

He noted that the distress call about the collapsed kitchen area was received around 7.25am.

Upon arrival, the firefighters went to straight to the area where they found the victim trapped underneath the rubble.

“The deterioration of the house structure and the soft soil at the site led to the collapse.

“The house structure is semi-permanent while the lower part of the house is concrete and the top part is wood,” Azaharul told reporters at the scene.

Hajijah had 11 children and at the time of the incident, six family members of the victim were also in the house, including her husband, son, daughter and grandchildren.  The police sent her body to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) morgue.
