KUCHING: The state-level Women’s Day Celebration 2019 themed ‘Sarawak Women in Safety and Security… In Good Hands’ held at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) yesterday saw women in the safety and security profession honoured for their services and contribution to the development of Sarawak.
Present to officiate at the event were Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
The Special Chief Minister Award… ‘In Good Hand’ went to Wong Siong Ting. Wong, from Sibu, served in the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) in Sarawak as acting superintendent of Police for 31 years (1960 to 1991), specifically in the Crime Investigation Department (CID) and the Special Branch.
Wong was the first female to lead the Divisional Special Branch Office in Miri, she was officer in charge of Sarawak Women Police and the first female police officer appointed as CID officer in Sarawak.
Wong is an accomplished singer and a choir conductor. She became the first woman to hold recitals in Malaya and performed in ‘Life in the Jungle’, Sarawak’s first operetta held in Kuching.
Other awards presented were the Special Chief Minister Award for Women Social Activist that went to Datin Amar Fatimah Jamil; the Chief Minister Award for Women Entrepreneur, which went to Nur Rahamah Ranong Abdullah @ Ranong Peru; and the Chief Minister Award for Women Leadership, which went to Paliani Samba Bilaidom @Lucy Lingam.
An Award for Excellent Organisation was presented to Pibakat.
Each recipient took home RM3,000, trophy, certificate and a flower bouquet.
