Women fined RM1k each for buying illegal lottery

KUCHING: Two women were each fined RM1,000, in default one month’s imprisonment, by the Magistrates’ Court here on Tuesday (July 5) for buying illegal lottery.

Carolyn, 22, and Mildred, 27, pleaded guilty to the charge before magistrate Zaiton Anuar.

The duo were charged with buying lottery tickets illegally at a grocery store in Siburan around 3.30pm on Feb 8 under Section 9 (1) of the Open Gambling House Act 1953, read together with Section 34 of the same Act.

Based on the case brief, a police team conducted a search at the grocery store suspected of conducting illegal lottery gambling.

Police later detained the two women and seized items such as a smartphone, a mobile printer, number chits and cash totalling RM1,543.
The prosecution was handled by Insp Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang while the two accused were not represented.
