KUCHING: Sarawakian women must continue to rise and take on challenges with their heads held high.
Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said that equality for all women is a commonly shared aspiration and goal.
Having said that, the Minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development (KWKPK) pointed out that the need to help women out there motivates her to do her best.
“We know that life is full of challenges and there are people who look at challenges within themselves while others look at it in general. As a minister, I look at the challenges faced by women as a whole.
“I know that there are women who want Sarawak to be progressive and perfect which also include the aspect of gender equality. This refers to gender equality in various sectors such as politic, economy, social, education and so on.
“This is why it is important for women to rise and take actions when they are faced with challenges. We do not want them to remain silent, they must take whatever opportunities that are available,” she said.
Fatimah also reminded that gender equality is a common goal which requires team efforts and she hopes to see that women are free from being victims of social issues.
“I wish to see women enjoy live freely and for them to not be victims of social issues like drug and substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, sexual crimes, homeless and poverty among others.
“We want to see better knowledge, especially on mental and emotional abuse because there are still women out there who are trapped alone in dealing with such matters. We want to encourage women who are in an abusive relationship to step up, fight and create opportunity for themselves in order to have a meaningful life.
“As for women who are facing poverty, we hope that they will empower themselves to overcome the situation by going for the government assistance as well as courses on skills that are available,” she added.
