KUCHING: The world’s most ‘famous’ father in law, Wong Muh Kiang first sentence was, “I am no gangster,” as he stood among the noisy uncompleted drain at Desa Wira, Batu Kawa as workers pounded on the wood and an excavator noisily dug into the drain yesterday afternoon. Not waiting for any questions, he said, “I did wrong for what I have done (beating his son in law). Please, I urged the people, do not follow my example. It is not the correct way to solve problems.

” Wong, 49, working as a contractor, clad in a pair of milky slacks and dotted shirt, was a far cry from what he was seen in a video unleashing his anger at his son in law last Wednesday at a shop lot corner at Brighton Square, Jalan Song.

Smiling and reaching out his hand, Wong asked that the interview be conducted in the car porch of someone’s house where there was less noise and explained, “My tattoo is an art, not the mark of a gang. I competed in tattoo competition all over Asia and had got many winning prizes from them.” Wong become world famous as his almost four-minute’s video of kicking and caning his son in law went viral as far as the Western world.

It was on a Wednesday when he told off his son in law who had bashed up his daughter causing her to end up in hospital seriously injured. While beating his son in law and later using a ‘rotan’ to cane him, he had said, “I did not bring up my daughter to be bashed around by you. I warned you many times not to beat my daughter.

Your parents did not teach you manners so today I teach you a lesson. Do you know your parents came to appeal for mercy for you? Even your little daughter, you did not come to visit her. Do you know who brought them (his daughter and one year old granddaughter) up now for you?” The video provoked debate all over different countries with many calling him a hero, and many supporting him of his protection towards his daughter.

Many commented that they would have done worst than him if their son in laws did that to their daughters.

There were some comments that he should not take the law into his own hands. Even Taiwan TV reported the news segment and praised Wong for standing up for his daughter. As the video viral and caught the attention of the police force, Wong said, he waited at home for the police to come and arrest him. He was remanded for three days. “Please, do not blame the police.

They are doing their job. I was very co-operative with them when they questioned me,” he said, adding that he let the law take its course.

Thanking the public for the tremendous moral support he received, he said every father loves her daughter and it is a natural instinct to be protective of them. “I do not want to go into that incident again. But please, let me tell you, do not follow my style. Fighting will never solve any problem. Let the police do their job if there is any problem. What I did was not a good example and do not blame the police as they too, have a job to do,” he added.
