KUCHING: Good news for folks in Kampung Haji Baki here ― a new community hall costing RM1.2 million is being built at the village and will be completed in one year.

Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang launched the project which is built adjacent to the village’s Darul Ehsan Mosque on Friday.

“I am very happy to see that this project has started because this is something that the villagers have long waited for. And this is also one of my election promises to the villagers,” he told reporters after handing over the project to the contractor.

He said the hall which can accommodate up to 500 people, once completed will be able to benefit more than 6,000 residents and they could utilise it for meetings, social programmes including wedding ceremonies.

“At the moment, the villagers have to use the mosque or the community leader’s house to hold small events,” he said.

He also expressed his gratitude to the Kampung Haji Baki village head and Penghulu Sabtuyah Yusuf for working closely and to ensure that the new hall and other development projects were implemented promptly for the benefit of the villagers.

“Besides this new hall, the construction of a futsal court costing RM200,000 has already been completed, while works on a RM600,000 hawkers centre and RM200,000 cemetery site project will start soon.

“Altogether, a total of RM2.5mil has been allocated for the development of infrastructure facilities in Kampung Haji Baki,” he said.

Lo, who is also Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman said a park under the jurisdiction of the council located near the new futsal court and the surrounding area would be lighted up so that more people would use the park.

“Now the park is very quiet, so we are going to blend the park with the rest of the development here so that people can also use it to watch the futsal competition.
