LUNDU: The construction of the Kampung Selampit bridge is expected to begin in October  after compensation payments are made to the affected landowners, said Opar assemblyman Billy Sujang.

The location for the proposed bridge involves land owned by several individuals in the area, requiring compensation payments before construction work can begin.

“We have asked the Public Works Department (PWD) about the compensation and they will make the payments promptly, within September. Therefore, construction work on the bridge can only begin in October,” he said.

He was speaking after attending the donation handover to the families of the victims of the Sungai Kayan boat tragedy at SMK Senibong here, officiated by Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn today.

He said the construction is expected to take three years to complete, with the approved cost of RM27.9 million.

Earlier, he revealed that his team, together with the Land and Survey Department and PWD, had surveyed a suitable area upstream for the construction of the bridge.

He said PWD is in the process of awarding the contract to the selected contractor soon.

The bridge construction project was approved in 2017.

“After becoming an elected representative in 2022, I immediately sought updates from the government on this project for further action,” he said.
