KUCHING: The Association of Iban Community Leaders in Kuching City (Pemaik) has been told to work closely with any non-governmental organisation (NGO) interested in helping Iban squatters in the city.
“The NGOs…they will have some programmes to help. Such cooperation and ties should be
sought after and nurtured,” said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas at the
association’s fourth annual general meeting (AGM) here yesterday.
Uggah, who is Pemaik patron, was represented at the event by Petrus Igat Mathious, a political secretary to the chief minister.
Uggah also advised Pemaik to work closely with the District Office to resolve some of the issues faced by Iban squatters such as unemployment and lack of basic amenities.
“We need government assistance in dealing with, and finding solutions to these problems,” he said, noting that the association too was doing its part in helping preserve Iban culture and tradition besides being a vital bridge between the government and the community.
“Pemaik leaders can disseminate to the community various government policies and programmes aimed at upgrading their quality of life.
“Therefore, I hope with the AGM and the election of new office bearers, Pemaik can better chart out its future direction and transformation programmes.
“Then it can stay relevant, recognised and well respected and be a reference for Iban Adat, culture and tradition,” he said.
Earlier, chairman Penghulu Gunting Hiang said Pemaik would be officially launched in November. The association comprises one Pemanca, seven Penghulus and 14 settlement (Genturong) leaders.
