KUCHING: Sarawak bagged two medals in the 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA) this morning.

Carmen Chaw Jia Min won the silver while Tai Leong Fung, 20, won the bronze in the women’s taijijian and men’s nanquan category of the wushu event respectively.

Winning the unexpected medal, Chaw said it was her first medal since her participation in the SUKMA 2022.

“I did not expect to win this because my target is just to give my best and showcase what I’ve been training during the past year.

“My main event is actually tomorrow. And with this win today, I will keep this fighting spirit and try my best to win another medal for Sarawak,” said the 17-year-old from Kuching.

Meanwhile, Tai expressed that he is proud to be able to contribute a medal for the home team.

He said he has been training for two years, including a two-month stint in China.

“I actually feel very nervous and stressed.

“Though I expected myself to get a better result, getting bronze is better than nothing. All in all, I am proud that I get to represent Sarawak again in my second SUKMA,” he said.

Selangor won gold in the women’s taijijian followed by Sarawak and Federal Territory.

In the men’s nanquan, Melaka bagged gold followed by Perak (silver) and Sarawak (bronze0.

In the women’s nanquan, Melaka grabbed the gold followed by Johor (silver) and Penang (bronze). 

The wushu tournament is being held from Aug 14 to 16 at the SSC Wushu Hall, Petra Jaya.
