KUCHING: The state government is committed to continuously improve the development of wushu sports in Sarawak.
The construction of the Wushu Training and Competition Centre located at the Sarawak Sports Complex, Petra Jaya is underway and it is expected to be completed in 18 months.
Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said this commitment is in line with how Sarawak had been given the mandate to host the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2024.
He said the construction of the centre will stimulate better achievements of the Sarawak contingent in wushu sports events.
“We saw great achievements of the Sarawak contingent in the wushu sports event in the previous SUKMA Games.
“Therefore, the construction of the centre will not only be a platform to produce more new wushu athletes, but also maintain Sarawak’s great reputation in the martial arts event,” he said at a press conference after completing the groundbreaking ceremony for the project yesterday.
Abdul Karim disclosed that the construction of the centre costs RM11,313,103.70 million and it will be one of the best in the country.
The centre will be equipped with two training carpets, a running track, outdoor warming up area, collapsible seating area for up to 800 pax and a stage.
Moreover, the centre’s design emphasizes functionality where spaces are designed to provide a functional, easy to maintain, and comfortable environment for international competitions with suitable materials and natural ventilation.
At the same time, Abdul Karim said the state government is now actively upgrading the existing sports facilities to be used during the upcoming SUKMA
“We not only want to ensure that Sarawak is the best host for SUKMA 2024, but also able to achieve the desired success,” he added.
