KUCHING: Serian WuZe Sport Association Dragon & Lion Dance Troupe is crowned the undisputed Lion King of Kings, earning a cash prize of RM8,000, a trophy, medals, and certificates at the Lien Heng Lion King Championship Open Tournament.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian presented the awards to the victorious team and the other 22 participating teams, including three from Indonesia.
“This competition is vital for fostering healthy competition and preserving our cultural values,” Dr Sim said during the closing ceremony yesterday (Sept 22).
Sarawak E-Xin Dragon & Lion Dance Troupe secured first place with a RM5,000 prize, while Jing Yin Dragon & Lion Dance Association claimed second place, winning RM3,000.
Sentosa X Rein B Team from Indonesia took home RM1,000 for third place, and consolation prizes of RM500 were awarded to the remaining teams.
Organisers of the event, led by Calvin Jong, expressed their desire to continue hosting the tournament in the future and attract more participants from across Malaysia.
Jong revealed plans to expand the competition to an international level and consider holding it in a larger venue.
“We aim to make Sarawak a hub for lion dance competitions and host this tournament annually,” Jong said.
“We’re pleased with the strong participation from Sarawakian teams and the fairness of our judging panel.”
