KUCHING: The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Malaysia has expressed optimism about the environmental prospects in Sarawak for the year 2024.
In a statement, WWF Malaysia noted that while Sarawak is experiencing growth, it is crucial to assess its performance in terms of conservation and environmental sustainability to ensure continued prosperity.
“It is only through safeguarding our most important asset – nature – that long-term prosperity will continue.
“Our four key messages for Sarawak would be focused on carbon emission reduction, increasing forest cover and establishing totally protected areas, habitat restoration, and carbon financing, as well as protecting wildlife.”
WWF highlighted the need for continuous wildlife conservation awareness programs, urging that as development progresses, essential wildlife habitats should not be destroyed.
“Perhaps it is time that we improve our efficiency to prosecute wildlife crimes and review the existing Wildlife Protection Ordinance 1998 so that stricter punishments can be meted out by our judges.”
WWF Malaysia expressed hope that state leaders would prioritise the environment in decision-making processes, in line with the state’s Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS2030).
“As development is projected to intensify in the coming years, careful land use planning is crucial. Green growth should not be at the expense of and loss of our natural heritage.”
WWF Malaysia also called for a coherent climate change action plan, encouraging Sarawak to take the lead in piloting Malaysia toward becoming a carbon-balanced or even carbon-negative nation.
“There may be challenges along the way, as the saying goes, ‘We cannot change the direction in which the wind blows, but we can adjust our sails.’
“In this journey, we call upon the Sarawak government to embrace all stakeholders in building a strong partnership and embrace collective actions.
“Together, we can tip the odds towards a future for all Sarawakians. Together possible.”
