DAR ES SALAAM (Tanzania): The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), a global conservation organisation, has embarked on a programme aimed at protecting water sources for more than 11 million people in Tanzania’s Morogoro and Dar es Salaam regions, an official said Sunday.
Happiness Minja, WWF Tanzania programme officer for Sustainable Investment for Africa, said under the programme, WWF Tanzania will distribute 20,000 tree seedlings to people free of charge for planting around water sources along Uluguru Mountains in Morogoro region, reported Xinhua.
“Most of the tree seedlings will be for fruits and spices such as cloves that help to conserve water sources,” said Minja when she supervised the distribution of the tree seedlings in Kinole ward in Morogoro region.
She said the programme will be undertaken in four wards of Morogoro region along the Uluguru Mountains where water sources for rivers that supply water to Dar es Salaam and Morogoro regions are located.
The Morogoro region agricultural officer, Chesco Lwaduka, said that more than 20 million tree seedlings were needed to protect water sources along the Uluguru Mountains. – BERNAMA-XINHUA
