MUKAH: Christmas Day is a celebration for all the people of Sarawak and not only amongst the Christians. Disclosing this on December 2, Balingian State Assemblyman, Abdul Yakub Haji Arbi, pointed out that this scenario makes Sarawakians very special.

“In Mukah and Sarawak in general, Christmas is not only celebrated by the Christians but also others, regardless of their religious and social backgrounds. We are together celebrating this joyous occasion,” he said. He added that the participation of the non-Christians were either by attending or joining the various events held in conjunction with the auspicious occasion.

The people’s repre s ent ative stated this while officiating at Dayak Bidayuh National Association(DBNA) Mukah Branch Pre-Christmas Dinner 2017 held on 2 December, at MK99 Seafood Restaurant, here. “Besides the function like this, the tradition of Open House during the Christmas Day is also an appropriate avenue to further strengthen the existing cordial relationship between the colourful society of Mukah, Sarawak and even Malaysia ingeneral,” he said.

Hence, Yakub called upon the community of Mukah and Sarawak to preserve and appreciate the unity, peace and harmony, and make it a permanent trend for every Sarawakian.

He attributed it not only to the existence of the spirit of tolerance but also acceptance and of respecting each other, thus making us well known for being dubbed as ‘the land of unity in diversity’.

On the existence of DBNA in this fast growing division, he praised the association for being very active in organising programmes for its members and community at large, including their participation in other functions held in Mukah. Also seen at the function were Mukah Division Resident, Awang Johari Awang Mustapha, Chairman of DBNA Mukah Branch , Harisson Ak Tomi, Advisor Agak Ak Mat, the Chairmen and representatives from other DBNA Branches in the state, DBNA Mukah Deputy Chairman, Wilber Ak Byahen, Secretary, Hangol Ak Katot, Exco Members and local community leaders. Besides enjoying the sumptuous food at the dinner, those present were also entertained with the energetic performances from dance group of Serumpun 1Malaysia Mukah, and choir group comprising of the members and children of DBNA Mukah.

Other highlights were the presentation of education incentives for the students who excelled in public examination, presentation of certificates of appreciation, Karaoke singing which involved the Guest of Honour and others from the floor and lucky draw. The programme kicked off with the carolling by the Choir from the Youth Group of St Jude’s Chapel of Kampung Petanak and joined by all those presents.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to wish the Christians a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2018,” said Yakub. The event was the second Pre- Christmas gathering held in Mukah Town this year. The first one was held by a kindergarten on November 18, recently.
