KUCHING: Members of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) were commended for their professionalism throughout the 19th DUN sitting.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said despite the limited time, DUN members had managed their time effectively.
“Even though we want to discuss more on a few of the issues, one thing you (DUN members) have is substance.
“During the discussion or debate session, we were very civilised and we followed the Standing Order.
“That is why we have made the amendment of the Standing Order — because we want to maintain the standard and decorum we have in DUN,” he said at the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Backbenchers Night at the Sheraton Hotel on Wednesday (Nov 20).
As GPS chairman, Abang Johari also expressed pride and gratitude for the debates by DUN members, which addressed critical constitutional issues, particularly Sarawak’s responsibilities and sovereignty over its continental shelf and resources.
“Earlier in my winding-up speech, I also reiterated several important matters during discussions under the Sarawak State Constitution, specifically Article 47, as well as Article 2, which addresses boundaries and our proprietary rights over land.
“This is a very crucial issue because we have taken an oath to uphold both constitutions. Alhamdulillah, may we continue to defend our sovereignty and our rights in Sarawak,” he said.
The event was attended by Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk Seri John Sikie Tayai, Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Liwan Lagang, Satok assemblyman Datuk Ibrahim Baki, among other guests.
