KUCHING: The history of the Indian community in Sarawak needs to be featured in the Borneo Cultures Museum to showcase the culture of the community to the public.
Bandar Kuching MP Dr. Kelvin Yii said, the Indian community has played an important role in developing the state.
“Each one of you played a vital part in building Sarawak and I believe your culture is important to be shared with everyone.
“Looking at the contribution of this community, we hope to see the history and culture displayed in the museum,” he said.
He said this before presenting donations in conjunction with the ‘Deepavali Celebration Ceremony with Stampin MP’ here, on Saturday (Nov 4).
He added that although the Indian community is a minority, every individual plays an important role in strengthening the development of the state, at the same time offering the diversity and uniqueness found in Malaysia.
“We also want the people who celebrate this festival to be able to have the same holiday as in West Malaysia so that they can gather together on this beautiful day.
“Compared to other states, only Sarawak has not gazetted this public holiday.
“We will continue to try to make it a reality so that the Hindu community (here) can celebrate this festival with their loved ones,” he said.
At the event, more than 100 people from the Indian community around the Stampin area received Deepavali donations from the chairman of Democratic Action Party (DAP) and Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen, who was represented by Yii.
Also present at the event was Chong’s special assistant, Michael Kong.
