KUCHING: DAP’s Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong came under fire when she chided the ruling Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) while debating the Constitution of the State of Sarawak (Amendment) (No 2) Bill 2022.
Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar who told her she was barking up the wrong tree cut off her debate speech by turning off the microphone.
In her speech, Yong had criticised GPS for agreeing to form the federal government with Perikatan Nasional (PN) and claimed that GPS did not take into consideration the racial and religious unity in Sarawak.
Mohd Asfia pointed out that Yong had got it wrong as the amendment bill was about the Anti-Party Hopping Law.
“No GPS member is joining PAS – you ask them. You are talking about coalitions, this is not about coalitions. This is about a member jumping from one party to another or an Independent joining a party.
“You are barking up the wrong tree,” he said.
Meanwhile, Satok assemblyman Datuk Ibrahim Baki called Yong out for ‘dreaming’.
“How do you know we are teaming up with PAS? What is clear is that you are forming a coalition with Umno in Perak – this is real. It’s against your motto,” he said.
Deputy Minister in Premier’s Department (Law, MA63, State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman also chided Yong and calling her ‘irrelevant’.
Sharifah Hasidah who tabled the Bill pointed out that what Yong was stating had nothing to do with the amendment.
“I do not see any point in what she is saying, you (Yong) are irrelevant. This amendment is about party hopping, not coalitions or alliance.
“I hope you understand, if you do not then you read back the law,” she said.
