KUCHING: With training in full swing and competition exposure secured, the Sarawak cycling team is aiming to bring home medals across four disciplines: road cycling, mountain bike (XCO), downhill, and BMX in SUKMA next month.

“We’re confident in our riders’ abilities.

“They’ve been putting in the hard work, and we’ve got a strong showing in several categories,” said team manager Irawan Sudarsono to Sarawak Tribune recently.

Irawan also lauded the success of two young female cyclists who recently emerged as National Champions in the BMX 16 and 14 age groups.

“They’ll definitely be shortlisted for SUKMA.

“While competing against more experienced riders in the elite category will be a challenge, anything can happen in BMX. We’re hopeful they’ll gain valuable exposure and potentially even snag a medal,” he said.
The news on the BMX track front is also positive.

“Construction is on track,” assured Irawan.

“The team is excited to get training on the new facility as soon as it’s completed, ideally before any other competing teams.”

The BMX team is currently undergoing further training at the National BMX track in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan until the Downhill National Championships in two weeks. They will then regroup in Kuching for a final base training camp.

Meanwhile, the mountain bike team has been competing in the Bintulu championships, while the road team has recently returned from training and races in West Malaysia. Both teams are now in Kuching for their final pre-SUKMA training camp.

“Our goal is two medals, but with the dedication and hard work of our riders and coaching staff, anything is possible,” he said.
