KUCHING: A 19-year-old man suffered minor burns to his back after a three-storey shophouse caught fire at Pasar Sungai Maong Lama, Mile 3 on Thursday.
The victim who suffered 30 per cent burns to his back, was rescued from the third floor of the building and later taken to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) for further treatment.
A spokesman from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said they received a distressed call around 12pm and despatched firemen from Batu Lintang, Tabuan Jaya and Padungan stations to the scene.
Upon arriving, extinguishing works were promptly carried out and the flames were brought under control around 12.18pm.
They managed to prevent the flame from spreading to other parts of the building.
It was reported that the third floor of the building was completely destroyed while, the second floor was 50 per cent damaged.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
