Young man fined RM4,200 for syabu possession

KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here fined a local man RM4,200 in default four months in prison for possessing 1.54g of methamphetamine in January last year.

Mohammed Azad Aswad Hazar, 21, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi to a charge framed under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and punishable under Section 12(3) of the same Act, for possession of prohibited drugs.

If convicted, he can be fined up to RM100,000 or be sentenced to prison for a term of up to five years.

He was found in possession of the prohibited substances by the roadside at Lorong Temenggong Haji Gobil, Kampung Samariang at about 10.45am on Jan 31, 2023.

According to the case facts, a police team had stopped a car driven by Azad for inspections due to suspicions of substance abuse.

During early examinations, police did not find any illegal item on him but, they found 10 plastic packets containing suspected syabu kept in a small bag inside the vehicle.

Azad was then detained for further investigations and the case items were taken to the Chemistry Department for analysis, which confirmed that the seized items were the methamphetamine drug weighing 1.54g.

Insp Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin prosecuted the case, while Azad was unrepresented by counsel.
