KUCHING: Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu has urged the youth to capitalise on the free tertiary education opportunities available at state-owned universities in 2026.
He said among the courses offered include the Bachelor of Mobile Gaming offered at University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) Sibu.
“The courses signal a significant push towards nurturing talent in the thriving gaming industry.
党This is something you can go and do for. And as I said, it’s a big industry. We need people to design the games, we need people to do the graphics, we need programmers for the interaction interface, and much more.媒
He said this during the launching of PC Image Esports Roadshow on Friday (April 5) at VivaCity Megamall here.
Rentap added that the commitment to the gaming industry was underscored by the revelation that all furniture utilised in the event venue was exclusively crafted for the sector, showcasing the industry’s enormous potential for growth and development.
“On the gaming industry, people don’t see it as it’s actually worth more than USD30bil a year. I was fortunate to be in Singapore about two years ago for two championships.
“The prize money was USD10mil. So this is a very big market. So we can start small, we can start young, but we need to go and train our athletes to be able to compete on a very high level.”
He said Sarawak is now taking steps towards enhancing its performance in future world championships.
“There have been advancements and also a good time to have representation from Sarawak to be on the world stage. So once again I congratulate them for that.
“But also beyond that, you must look at the industry. Esports is not only about gaming, it’s about cosplay, graphic design, programming and it’s about having a very good, innovative and creative style.”
