Youth fined RM500 for operating gambling devices

KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here sentenced a youth to a fine of RM500 in default of ten days in jail for operating several gambling apparatuses last January.

Magistrate Zaiton Anuar meted out the sentence against the 20-year-old accused who pleaded guilty after a social report hearing today.

According to the charges, the accused worked as a shop assistant and was found to be operating several gambling apparatuses using two televisions, 14 joysticks and two top-up devices in a premises at Taman Lee Ling, Matang around 9.20 pm on Jan 29.

For this reason, the accused was charged in accordance with Section 4B (a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which carries a maximum fine of RM10,000 for each gambling apparatus and a jail term of up to five years, if convicted.

Berdasarkan fakta kes, sepasukan polis dari Bahagian Siasatan Jenayah IPD Padawan telah membuat serbuan di sebuah premis di Taman Lee Ling, Jalan Matang, pada 29 Januari lalu, selepas mengesyaki terdapat aktiviti perjudian berunsurkan mesin slot lalu menahan seorang lelaki(tertuduh) yang menyatakan dirinya sebagai pembantu kedai.

Barang-barang kes turut dirampas seperti dua unit televisyen, 14 batang ria, dua unit alat tambah nilai, satu modem wifi dan wang tunai RM421.

Based on the facts of the case, a police team from Padawan Criminal Investigation Division (CID) raided the said premises on suspicion of a slot machine-based gambling activity.

They then arrested a man (the accused) who identified himself as shop assistant.

The team also seized two televisions, 14 joysticks, two top-up devices, a Wifi modem and cash amounting RM421.

Investigations and gambling expert’s report confirmed that the seized items were used as gambling apparatuses, as stated under the interpretation of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.

Insp Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang prosecuted the case while the accused was unrepresented by a counsel.
