KUCHING: A man who lost his identity card may face jail time and a hefty fine after he resorted to lodging a fake police report to avoid paying the penalty for a replacement.
District police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah said the 22-year-old was charged in the Magistrate’s Court, here yesterday under Section 182 of the Penal Code.
He said the suspect claimed he was robbed by two men at knife point on Aug 1, at about 7.30am in Jalan Kruing, Bintawa.
“The suspect claimed to have suffered a loss of RM1,200 as well as some important documents such as his identity card and bank cards.
“The result of police investigations found that the suspect had fabricated the story to avoid being fined by the National Registration Department for losing his identity card,” he said in a statement today.
Ahsmon noted that this was not the first time police have received false police reports this year.
He said between January and August, as many as five false police reports involving robbery and looting incidents were uncovered by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Kuching District Police Headquarters (IPD).
He explained that all the suspects were charged in court under Section 182 of the Penal Code which provides for a maximum fine of RM2,000 or imprisonment of not more than six months or both.
“We would like to remind the public not to make false reports that would give a negative impression of the occurrence of crime in the Kuching District.
“We will take action against individuals who do so.”
