KUCHING: Police have arrested a man who allegedly stole donation money at a surau near Taman Won Baru, Jalan Matang.
Kuching district police chief, ACP Awang Din said the 18-year-old unemployed suspect had entered the surau in a suspicious manner — as seen through CCTV footage inside the surau.
Early investigation found the suspect entering the surau through the unlocked main door and stole the money after picking its lock.
Police officers arrested the suspect after a report was lodged on Wednesday.
Further background check found that the suspect had two criminal records.
The suspect is being remanded to facilitate investigation under section 380 of the Penal Code which provides for imprisonment for up to 10 years and a fine, upon conviction.
Awang Din reminded all houses of worship — including surau, to take safety measures by not leaving the place unattended to prevent such incidents from happening.
“The installation of CCTV is important to assist the police investigation in tracking down the suspects involved, as what happened in this case,” he said.
