SIBU: A youth was indicted in the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday (May 30) on a serious charge of cultivating two cannabis plants.

Brandon Tiang Zheng Nam, the accused, did not enter a plea after the charge was read and explained to him through an interpreter as the presiding Sessions Court Judge was unavailable at the time.

According to the charge, Tiang stands accused of planting two cannabis plants at a residence in Lorong Rambai around 12.15 am on May 24.

This offense falls under Section 6B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and is punishable under Section 6B(3) of the same Act. If convicted, it carries a penalty of life imprisonment and a minimum of six strokes of the whip.

Magistrate Oon Kork Chern has scheduled the case for further mention on June 19, to be heard in the Sessions Court.

In the meantime, Tiang, who is represented by legal counsel Orlando Chua, remains in custody as the offense is non-bailable.
