KUCHING: Some 100 people attended the Youth Meet Up forum with Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri organised by the Kenyalang Prodigy at Dormani Hotel, Kampung Masjid here on Saturday.
The forum titled Article 1 (2) discussed the current issue in Sarawak, where Nancy, who is also Batang Sadong MP, shared her experiences on the matter.
She expressed pride in how the Sarawak government has managed to maintain its stand in Parliament in the matter of the Federal Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2019 to make Sabah and Sarawak equal partners.
“We won the majority seats and the federal government didn’t even realise they have lost in a manner they actually thought they had won,” she said.
She further stated that in order for a Bill to be passed, it needs a two-third vote majority in Parliament.
“It’s not that we don’t support the amendment, but for that we emphasise that the matter to be brought to a special select committee,” she said.
She further explained that by abstaining, it would provide some time for the Sarawak government to find a better solution in the interest of Sarawak.
“Lately, through the social media, I saw a lot of assumptions regarding this matter. This could lead to more confusion among the public which could make matters worse.”
Nancy reminded the audience that the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) is a certificate or a ticket to the founding of Malaysia with Sarawak and Sabah as equal partners.
“Through MA63, the autonomy of Sarawak is safeguarded by the Federal Constitution where the rights of Sarawak are secured,” she said.
In Parliament recently, an MP from the peninsular boldly spoke against Sarawak’s immigration autonomy rights.
She said Sarawak youths must be reminded that an understanding of MA63 is important for them to know what the state’s’ rights are and why it must be safeguarded to ensure Sarawak continues to exist.
