KAPIT: Yayasan Perpaduan Sarawak (YPS) recently concluded the eighth Media Edge workshop, engaging local youths here in a comprehensive media literacy programme.
The event saw participation from 25 students across SMK Kapit, SMK Kapit 2, and SMK Selirik, accompanied by six teachers. The workshop, led by Andrica Claudia, a certified trainer from Owl & Badger Group, was marked by lively discussions and creative collaboration.
“Participants explored various aspects of media literacy, including information discernment, media bias, and digital citizenship. Despite diverse backgrounds, languages, and schools, there was a remarkable display of unity and collaboration,” YPS said in a statement today (Nov 21).
The statement further emphasised the role of the Media Edge: A Youth Media Literacy program in equipping Sarawak’s students with media skills while promoting unity among different ethnic groups. It aligns with Sarawak’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, focusing on economic growth and social inclusivity.
Veronnica Olivia, a participant from SMK Selirik, said the workshop highlighted the importance of responsible social media use.
“It covered recognising misinformation and the essential factors for social media use, like safety, privacy, and honesty,” said Veronnica.
Meanwhile, SMK Kapit 2 teacher Fatin Shafikah said the programme was beneficial to the community.
“Initially expecting a basic overview of media, I was pleasantly surprised by the depth and relevance of the information presented. The active participation of students in discussions, even on unfamiliar topics, highlighted the programme’s effectiveness in engaging and educating them,” she said.
