KUCHING: Around 160 dancers enchanted residents with their Yuanji dance at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) square.
The dancers comprised 18 teams from Sarawak, Penang, Kuantan, Selangor, Malacca, Johor and Indonesia.
MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the dance, a mixture of martial arts, physical therapy, meditation, dance and qigong exercise, has been a symbol of unity for 23 years, a testament of the community’s collective strength and determination.
“Yuanji dance holds a special place in our hearts, as it was introduced to Kuching back in 1994 by a visionary West Malaysian businessman.
“Since its first vibrant performance at the Kuching festival in 1997, the mesmerising dance has become an integral part of our cultural tapestry, captivating our senses and filling our hearts with joy,” he said when officiating at the event yesterday (Aug 13).
Wee said the dance routine is not only a visual spectacle but also a powerful testament to the pursuit of health and longevity.
“The graceful movements, inspired by the elements of nature, remind us of the delicate balance that exists between our wellbeing and the world around us.
“The dance embodies this essence of self-healing, emphasising the importance of holistic wellness and inner harmony,” he added.
Present at the event were Yuanji dance organising chairwoman Jong Jia Chee and Kuching Festival chairman Mok Chang Phing.
