CHINA: The presence of digital technology has brought massive transformation to a traditional print media to become one of the most well established omni-media (all-encompassing and media) platform in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China today.
Zhejiang Daily, which was founded in May 9, 1949, and the leading newspaper group in East China’s Zhejiang province, has taken a bold step of growing its newspaper by adopting digital platform to keep up with the trend while maintaining its print media.
According to Zhejiang Daily Press Group deputy editor-in-chief Jin Bo, he said the group aims to bring up-to-date news to the readers and audience with readable and useful news content through various media platform it produces.
“From newspaper to omni-media platform, the group has invested in manpower, materials and capitals on internet and mobile terminals while also focusing on building mobile apps,” he said.
Currently, he said the group owns 26 newspapers and magazines, including Zhejiang Daily, Qianjiang Evening News and Red Flag Publishing House (Hongqi Press).
“The group has also developed a number of new media assets such as Zhejiang Online website, Zhejiang News Application, Zhejiang Mobile Newspaper and The Hour Application,” he said.
He mentioned among the digital development is the Zhejiang Daily (Zhejiang News App), Zhejiang Online website, and Qianjiang Evening News has ranked high among the media in China in terms of communication capability.
Moreover, Zhejiang Daily and Qianjiang Evening News have been selected as ‘China’s Top 500 Most Valuable Brands’, ‘Asia’s top 500 Brands’ and ‘World Top 500 Media’ for many years.
Also, Zhejiang Daily Media Holdings Group Co, Ltd has been selected as the first batch of China’s ‘Digital Publishing Transformation Demonstration Units’ and has been awarded as the ‘National Key Laboratory of Media Convergence Development’.
The ‘Media Cube’, a platform which is independently developed by the Group, has won the highest prize of ‘China News Science and Technology Award’ – the ‘Grand Prize of Wang Xuan Award’.
Another intelligent platform ‘Tianmu Cloud’, which supports the construction of convergence media centres, has been widely used in Zhejiang Province.
To date, the group has 135 independent legal entities. In 2011, the group’s media operating assets were successfully listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange and it was the first provincial newspaper group in the country to list its entire media operating assets.
The group’s total assets, total revenue and total profitability rank among the best in the domestic industry. Zhejiang Daily Media Holdings Group Co, Ltd was selected as one of the ‘Top 30 National Cultural Enterprises’ for three years in a row from 2017 to 2019.
Earlier, the media representatives of various organisations from Kuching and other international countries were taken on a site visit to the Zhejiang Daily Press Group’s headquarters and museum in Hangzhou to learn about its development and success.
The site visit was part of the activity during the Zhejiang Media Cooperation and Communication Forum with International Friendship Cities held at The Dragon Hotel in Hangzhou yesterday.
