KUALA LUMPUR: National number one singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia created history for himself when he advanced to the quarterfinals of the World Championships which is being held in St Jakobshalle, Basel, Switzerland.
The world number 13 defeated eight seeded Kenta Nishimoto of Japan 21-15, 11-21, 22-20 in the third round Thursday.
However, standing in his way is defending champion and world number one Kento Momota.
Malaysian professional mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying also qualified for the quarterfinals
when they beat unseeded Japanese pair Takuro Hoki-Wakana Nagahara 17-21, 21-13, 21-14.
The fifth seeds will be up against third seeded Yuta Watanabe-Arisa Higashino
of Japan.
However, women’s doubles pair Vivian Hoo-Yap Cheng Wen crashed out in the third round when they lost to Chinese pair Du Yue-Li Yin Hui 15-21, 21- 11, 8-21.
The same fate befell mixed doubles pair Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing who lost to Thai pair Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Sapsiree Tairattanachai 21-17, 21-7. – Bernama
