KUCHING: The Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) is focusing on building affordable low-cost housing for the B40 income group, said its Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin.

“We will work together with the State government especially on the State premium land issue that should not be going at high price,” she said during a press conference at Pullman Hotel here yesterday.

During a courtesy call on Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Johari Tun Openg earlier on, Zuraida said that the former welcomed the cooperation between KPKT and State Ministry of Local Government and Housing (MLGH) to discuss housing issues.

“When the price is high, the developers have to take into account the cost of the land which results in expensive homes and this will affect the B40 income group.

“At the moment, infrastructures, roads and bridges are being developed, so now we want to proceed further. We want to know the amount of money being allocated and possibly the best place for us to construct affordable homes for B40 income group,” she explained.

She added that in order for the country to progress, KPKT has to improve the standards of living by rectifying the situation of B40 income group.

“The State government has agreed to focus on B40 and the low income group. In that case, we will be able to work together,” she said.

On the People’s Housing Project (PPR), Zuraida explained that as long as the projects were implemented based on the criteria with the provision of letter of intent from KPKT, the projects would continue on.

“However, if I have a chance I want to make adjustments in regards to the concept of the housing, especially the design because my concern is the B40 income group. I want to make sure that they will have better living conditions, more comfortable homes with bigger space and better facilities in their housing areas.

“So, if it can be made in time, I want to make a proper adjustment, but if not, they can go on with what has been approved,” she stressed.
